The Coach’s Field Manual to CLA
A practical guide to the Constraints-Led Approach
Free two-chapter preview
The book is directed to all Coaches, from all sports or activities. If you coach, its for you!
Coach the problem, not the technique
Most coaching still runs on instruction. Show the correct technique, correct the athlete toward it, drill it until it sticks. It looks productive, and then the real game starts and it falls apart. The athlete who’s sharp on the pads freezes in sparring. The player who nails the drill can’t find the same pass when it’s live.
This book takes the opposite path. Skill emerges when an athlete solves real problems in an environment you design, and your job is designing those problems, not handing over answers. It turns the science of how people actually learn to move into a practical, do-it-Monday method.
It’s the book I wish I’d had when I started out with CLA. It explains the hard words of the method in plain language, so once you have them you can move on to the deeper books and follow them with ease.
What the free preview gives you
Two full chapters, straight from the book:
- Skill isn’t installed, it emerges. Why the athlete who looks great in the drill falls apart in the game, and what to do instead.
- Repetition without repetition. The one idea that changes how you run every session: repeat the problem, not the solution.
Plus an overview of the whole book and where it’s headed.

The full book, four parts
Part 1
The shift. How skill actually forms, and why the classical model underdelivers.
Part 2
The language. Constraints, affordances, representative design, attunement. The tools you shape practice with.
Part 3
The method. A step-by-step system, from reading your sport to building and running the games that grow the skill.
Part 4
Into practice. Session templates, running the room, worked examples, common mistakes, and how to migrate from classical coaching one step at a time.
The Coach's Field Manual to CLA is planned for release in Q4 of 2026.
